Los Angeles - 8-Week Camera Acting Classes

8 week class

Weeks 1 & 2:
Everyone will be on his or feet working. The focus will be on scene analysis and character break-downs.

Weeks 3 - 5:
These 3 weeks are dedicated to blocking and shooting the scenes on real sets. We'll do masters, medium and close shots of each scene.

You will learn to match your movements and gestures and keep them consistent as you repeat your performances in the different set-ups. (Learning to train yourself to do this, through practice, will make your future editors love you! You'll make them look good because your actions will match which allows the scene to have a seamless flow.)

We will always review the basics of acting, the emotional work, so as you are honing your camera technique, you are still keeping your work honest and full.

Weeks 6 & 7:
These two weeks will be spent in our post facility. In ADR sessions with professional sound engineers, we will be using Pro-tools and playing it back over our JBL 5.1 sound system, students will continue to work on their scenes from a post-production perspective, learning how to sync the dialogue, and match their performances.

Week 8:
View and analyze the session's work.

Joel Courtney completes filming of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn

Coaching client Joel Courtney recently completed shooting the feature film Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, where he plays the role of Tom.

Hallie Todd coached Joel for all of his auditions for the film. This is Joel's second feature film. He recently appeared in this summer's blockbuster release, Super 8. Congratulations to Joel!

Student lands role in The Mooring

Hallie Todd Studios student Clark Perry, plays the role of "Young Richard" in In House Media Film Partners' film The Mooring. Clark was cast out of classes.

Also cast was Bailey Morgan as "Young Mickey." Bailey was discovered by The Mooring producers, Glenn Withrow and Hallie Todd, at an open casting session in Orange County in August, 2011.

Super 8 out on DVD

Hallie Todd Studios coaching client Joel Courtney's film Super 8 is being released on DVD and BluRay on November 22nd, 2011.

After the preliminary auditions for the JJ Abrams/Steven Spielberg film, Joel came to Hallie Todd and Glenn Withrow to prepare for the many callbacks. After several weeks and many hours of concentrated coaching, Joel won the lead role of 'Joe Lamb'.

Super 8 tells the story of six friends who witness a train wreck while making a Super 8 movie, only to learn that something unimaginable escaped during the crash. They soon discover that the only thing more mysterious than what it is, is what it wants.

On-Camera Technique

Eventually all actors want to take what they know from class, and work as professional actors in the entertainment industry. Our On-Camera Technique class has been designed to create real world on-set scenarios and prepares the student to work outside the safety of the acting class environment.

Hallie Todd and partner Glenn Withrow recently produced the full-length independent feature film, The Mooring, starring ten students from Hallie Todd Studios.

On-Camera Technique at Hallie Todd Studios is a totally unique experience, and we guarantee it is unlike ANY ACTING CLASS you have EVER taken!

We have classes available Saturdays (6 week session) for ages 8 to 12 and 13 to adult starting September 17th. We also have Tuesday evening classes (4 week session) for ages 8 to 12 and Thursday evening classes for 13 to adult beginning in October.

Joel Courtney lands the lead in Super 8

After months of call-backs, Joel landed the part in the new JJ Abrams/Steven Spielberg Summer release which hits theatres on June 10th, 2011.

Student Michelle LaBret has booked a feature film with Universal called RENEE starring Chad Michael Murray, Kat Dennings and Rupert Friend. Michelle plays the role of "Nikki."

Michelle was also nominated for a Young Artist Award for Young Actress in a DVD Film for her role as "Rachel" in THE GOLD RETRIEVERS.

Hallie Todd Studios is holding a six-week Auditioning, Cold Reading and Camera Technique class from April 15th to May 20th, 2010 in Los Angeles. Classes are small and enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis.

In this six-week session we will focus on building raw material into an integrated performance for the camera.

PART ONE - Weeks 1-3

The world of auditioning is about creating something special and memorable with little or no time. Actors must make personal and high-stakes choices based on an often-limited understanding of the text, character and action.

Through scripted material from a variety of styles from different mediums, we will focus on choices, commitment, and "owning" the audition.

The tools taught in this class will assist you whether meeting agents, managers, casting directors, college admissions directors, future employers, or the rest of the world. Let the insights of truly experienced Hollywood professionals guide you in creating a memorable experience for your audience.

PART TWO - Weeks 3-6

The second three weeks will bring the work from the first three to the camera.

What are the fundamentals of acting on film?

o Hitting marks.
o Emotional and physical continuity.
o Relaxation.
o Honesty.
o Imaginative and unique acting choices.

Learn to calibrate a performance appropriate to the lens choice, shot design and angle. Throughout each session, students will view filmed exercises of their work and engage in discussions to measure knowledge of the content covered.

REQUIREMENTS:
All students are asked to bring a minimum of three 1-2 minute contemporary monologues These pieces can be from a play, movie, television script, edited from a novel, or original material. Please bring 3 typewritten (12 pt) copies to the first class, one for each instructor and one for yourself. These pieces SHOULD NOT BE PERFORMANCE READY, and need only be LOOSELY memorized. A Remembrance

It is with great sadness and love that we share the news of the passing of Hallie's father, producer-writer George Eckstein.

He was an exemplary human being, well-loved and respected by all who knew him. He was a great guy, a wonderful father and a loving, devoted husband. He will be missed terribly.

His reputation as a producer of class and integrity is undisputed. His many achievements and contributions to his profession are too numerous to mention. Aside from his own credits, during a career which spanned fifty years, he guided and nurtured some of the most influential artists in film and television.

"George hired me to direct his ABC Movie of the Week, 'Duel,' and my career was never the same," Steven Spielberg said in a statement. "I owe so much to him for having the courage to hire a kid to do a man's job. George had passion for telling highly original stories and was a wonderful mentor to me and so many others. I will miss his quiet dignity."

He leaves behind his loving wife Selette Cole Eckstein; daughters Nora Eckstein Sekowski, Hallie Todd, and Jennifer Eckstein; sons-in-law Marek Sekowski and Glenn Withrow; and two granddaughters, Ivy Withrow and Clara Sekowski.

LOS ANGELES, Calif., May, 18, 2009 – Hallie Todd Studios, in conjunction with In House Media Film Partners, has announced the launch of the acting conservatory's first full-length feature film, an ensemble piece, starring actress Hallie Todd and ten of her acting students from Washington, Idaho, Texas and California.

The film will be directed by Todd’s husband and partner, actor/writer/producer Glenn Withrow.

Todd, best known for her role as Jo McGuire in Disney’s "Lizzie McGuire" franchise, returns to acting after a hiatus during which she and her husband focused on their production company, In House Media, and film acting conservatory, Hallie Todd Studios, which has been recognized by ABC Primetime, the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times Sunday Magazine as “one of the best.”

Todd and Withrow, along with the couple's daughter, Ivy Withrow, 15, wrote the screenplay exclusively for the conservatory students.

Filming will commence in July 2009.

Creagen Dow co-starring in "Castle"

Student Creagen Dow just completed shooting a co-starring role in the new ABC show “Castle,” a one-hour witty drama based on a famous crime and horror novelist Richard Castle (played by Nathan Fillion, Desperate Housewives) who helps the NYPD homicide division solve crimes.

Creagen plays Max Heller in the episode titled 'Hedge Fund Homeboys' which is scheduled to air in March. Check Creagen's website for air date at www.creagendow.com.

Student lands film role

Treasure of the West is feature film about two kids -- one the son of a struggling small-town merchant, the other the daughter of a megastore executive -- who take to the woods to find the fabled treasure of the Conquistadors.

Through scripted material from a variety of styles from different mediums, we will work on text analysis, character and action. We apply (and cite for beginners) the techniques of the major schools of modern acting: Stanislavsky, Chekov, Strasberg and Meisner. Students learn about these innovators to the art, and explore the benefits of their teaching in their class work.

Coaching by Hallie Todd and screen test directed and shot by Glenn Withrow helped Karli put on the full court press for landing the role of “Evelyn” in the independent feature film, “Pearl”.

This film tells the true story of Pearl Carter Scott, a Chickasaw girl, who is well known as the youngest licensed pilot in America.

Creagen Dow, who plays Jeremiah Trottman on Zoey 101, has just released his debut CD "My Inner Self." The alternative/rock songs are available for purchase on iTunes.com. Creagen is currently working on his second CD "Life Lessons" which will be released in the next few months.

Creagen's feature film "The Least of These" premiered at 20th Century Fox in Los Angeles on Thursday, May 29, 2008. Creagen plays Patrick, one of four boys at a boarding school who try to find out what happened to a former priest who disappeared.

Young Brett DelBuono lands a spot with Benjamin Bratt on A&E’s ‘The Cleaner’

He is five inches taller than he was when he made his first movie, and his voice is deeper. Brett DelBuono is now 15, and his acting career is beginning to take off.

“There’s heavier stuff, more dramatic because you’re at an older age,” Brett said the other day as he reflected on his current on-screen pursuits.

Two years ago, Brett had just finished shooting a small role in “Balls of Fury” with Christopher Walken, a big-screen flick that was released last year. He had also landed minor parts in pilots for two TV shows, neither of which took off.

But the young actor kept on auditioning, making tapes at his home in Westboro and turning up in person when he was in Hollywood.

Just as the writers’ strike got under way last November, Brett was booked for a recurring role in “The Cleaner,” an edge-of-the-seat drama starring Benjamin Bratt. Brett has been cast as Bratt’s son, Ben Banks, and has been told that he will be in eight to 10 episodes. The series is expected to start airing on A&E in August and is produced in conjunction with CBS.

Is this the big break?

“I don’t know,” Brett said with a shrug and a wide grin. “It’s at least a big step for me. It’s an interesting show. The cast is great. I hope it will take off.”

The producers are optimistic enough to have signed Brett to a seven-year contract.

“The Cleaner” is about a recovering drug addict, William Banks, who, with the help of two assistants, rescues young people in the grip of addiction. He delivers them to rehab and takes down drug operations. Brett plays a normal teenager who resents the time his father spends away from the family. “It’s all based in truth,” Brett said, adding that the real William Banks is always on the set.

Brett is thrilled to be working with Mr. Bratt.

“He’s a really nice guy,” Brett said. “He’ll knock on my trailer door and say, ‘Hey, you want to go rehearse?’ He’ll talk about the scene and give me pointers.”

The young actor lives with his family in a modern Colonial on a hilltop. Brett and his mother, Debbie DelBuono, have been dividing their time between the coasts for three years. Brett has two older brothers; his father, Gary DelBuono, is a vice president at Travelers Insurance in Hartford.

Last week, Brett and his mother headed back to Los Angeles. They have an apartment in a 1940s complex in Studio City, at which several episodes of “I Love Lucy” were shot. Brett had been summoned to do publicity shots for “The Cleaner.” Around Hollywood, he said, it’s common to see splashy promotions for new shows.

Brett, who has curly hair and a wide open face, is bubbly and full of good cheer when he talks about the tryouts and the competition he faces for parts. He’s not even testy when he mentions the good movie role he recently missed out on. After a series of auditions, it came down to him and another young actor.

“If you’re not called back after the first audition, that’s one thing,” he said. “But when you come so close, it’s a killer.”

Brett’s career started five years ago when his mother saw an article in the Telegram & Gazette about auditions for the movie, “Freedom Park.” The family comedy was set in Central Massachusetts and made by actress/producer Andrea Ajemian, who lives in Rutland, and Jon Artigo, her business partner. Brett was 10. He tried out for the lead role but wasn’t quite the right type. Mr. Artigo was so impressed that he wrote in a part for him.

Even then, Brett already was an experienced performer. He had taken years of dancing, singing and acting lessons and been in half a dozen community theater musicals. After “Freedom Park,” mother and son got serious about the big time. Mrs. DelBuono signed up her son for the TVI Actors Studio intensive training camp in New York City. Brett later attended the same program in Los Angeles. He came away with both a manager and an agent.

Brett goes to school online. Child-labor laws require that he study at least three hours a day. If he is going to have a long shoot on a particular day, he can bank school hours ahead of time. Until he turns 16, his mother must be on the set with him when he is acting.

Brett has already had a taste of the quintessential Hollywood life. He walked the red carpet for the premiere of “Balls of Fury,” stopping to answer reporters’ questions and greet fans.

Asked what he thought of this year’s Academy Award winners, he laughed as he offered his stock reply: “Everyone who won deserved it.”

With a twinkle in his dark brown eyes, Brett went on to explain: “It pays to be cautious about what you say about an actor or a movie. You never know what the connections are.”

Hallie Todd Studios student Aidan Mitchell is gearing up for more episodes of the F/X Network's series The Riches, which was just renewed for a second season! From Variety:

“We're very proud to have managed, in the toughest possible competitive environment, to launch Dirt and The Riches — two highly original series that have resonated with our audience as strongly as The Shield and Rescue Me,” said FX Networks president and general manager John Landgraf in a statement.

FX officials indicate that The Riches and Dirt have produced solid numbers among the network's target demo of adults 18-49. Dirt's cumulative delivery for its rookie season was 3.66 million adults 18 to 49 and 5.2 million total viewers, while over the first seven episodes of The Riches, the series delivered 3.9 million in the demo and 5.9 million watchers when gauged on a cume basis.

Creagen Dow readies for new feature film

Creagen Dow will be going from the small screen, where he's currently reprising his role as Jeremiah Trottman in Season 4 of Nickelodeon's Zoey 101, to the big screen playing Patrick in the feature film The Least of These. The drama/thriller is about a priest, Andre James, played by Isaiah Washington (Grey's Anatomy), who is sent to a prestigious Catholic boarding school and is soon caught up in a murder scandal. Creagen's character is one of four boys at the boarding school who, along with Andre, try to find out what happened to a former priest who disappeared. Creagen Dow, who plays Jeremiah Trottman on Nickelodeon's Zoey 101, was presented with the “Environmental Advocate Award” for helping to bring focus to the worldwide environmental effort. Creagen, along with Eddy Martin and Raven Goodwin from Nickelodeon's Just Jordan, received the award at the 2007 Los Angeles Children's Earth Day event where he also helped with tours, spoke about the environment, and signed autographs at the largest children's environmental event in Los Angeles. Popular actress Hallie Todd, recently featured on ABC’s “Primetime” and in The New York Times Magazine, will host a two-week summer Film Acting Camp for young actors on June 18-29, 2007, at CYT, 6205 East Mansfield in Spokane Valley. Hosted by Hallie Todd (who played “Jo McGuire” on the Disney Channel’s ultra-popular TV series “Lizzie McGuire”) and her husband, actor/writer/director Glenn Withrow, the film acting camp features instruction in improvisation, scene study, monologue work and camera technique.
“Whether your child is a professional actor or simply interested the art of acting, this film acting camp will be a great experience,” says Todd. “The focus of the workshop is threefold: to experience the joy of acting, to make new friends, and to be challenged, at whatever level they are, to do their personal best.” According to Todd, “The life skills that are taught as a natural part of the study of acting are numerous and include: improving critical thinking, physical coordination, public speaking, confidence and overcoming shyness, group problem solving, emotional risk-taking, and understanding and compassion for others.”

Creagen Dow appears on TV's "Veronica Mars" Oct. 3

Creagen Dow has just completed filming an episode of Veronica Mars which airs on the CW Network (formerly UPN). In this first episode of Season 3, titled "Welcome Wagon," Creagen plays Ferret, who is one of two boys that witness a robbery and are talking to Veronica (played by Kristen Bell) and Wallace (played by Percy Daggs III) in a bar. This episode is scheduled to air on Tuesday, October 3 at 9 pm. Also, Creagen is reprising his role as Jeremiah Trottman on Nickelodeon's Zoey 101. Season 3 is scheduled to begin airing September 24th.
